the very first dress i made for my “picnic” project is the last one i’m sharing.
two watermelons, side by side.
it was this fabric that made me want to make dresses for all my girls.
the watermelon seed seersucker?
picnic perfection.
my creative process?
eh, not so much. ;)
you like how i can’t even be bothered to flip to a clean page…just sketch right over top of existing notes. upside-down, even.
the dress…
green “rind” outside, with pintucks down the front…
little “x” straps and pink buttons to close above the shirred back…
but the hat.
ahhh, the hat.
i’ve said it before on this blog, but it bears repeating:
I. DON’T. DO. MATH.
but i fool myself. i conveniently forget how my previous tangles with the numerical beast have ended.
i’m all, a hat? i can do that. easy. i’ll just measure her head…
and make some simple calculations…
wait.
what?
let’s take a better look at that folks, shall we?
but i pressed on, oblivious to the inherent flaw(s) in my calculations:
*1 I. DON’T. DO. MATH.
and,
*2 heads aren’t square.
beware the angry gnome, people.
BEWARE.
i wish i could say this was fake. all this math wizardry and angry pointy chapeau wearing staged for the benefit of a laugh on this here blog.
it’s not. i did. big, fat FAIL.
so i did what i do in all times of crisis: throw the math out the window, and sew organically (my euphemism for “by the seat of my pants”)
and i cut something more like this:
and sewed them up:
and sewed on some straps…
and made a…a…this:
and then sewed it all together.
and that, my friends, is how the googiemomma makes a hat.
one {cranky} little watermelon baby
and one {less cranky} watermelon hat baby, who’s big head has grown too much…
and so she can now barely fit her watermelon noggin
into her watermelon hat.
nothing like a bit of irony to start your day. ;)
I literally laughed out loud at the Angry Gnome picture. I hear you on not doing math and being better served by winging it: I watch Project Runway in envy of the drafting talents of some of the competitors. But it all turned out beautifully for you in the end! Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI laughed so hard at your angry gnome picture and comments as well!! SO funny! The hat and baby are both darling, I adore the dress too! Great job, keep up the funny posts, this one was hilarious and (aside from the great hat at the end) almost identical to my sewing endeavors lol :)
