whooo, me?

i admit it.

in case you haven’t noticed, i’m a complete pushover for my kids.
especially that little one.

when i walk into the fabric store…well, let’s just say my defenses are already down. and when she starts bouncing in the cart because she sees “whoo-whoo favricks”…you know what’s coming.

1 yard whoo-whoo favricks, in my cart.

although, not to justify or nothin’…but she does need some winter dresses, AND it is an adorable corduroy fabric, AND it was on sale thankyouverymuch.

so there.

anyway…the brown floral/paisley fabric is something i had in my stash. i hemmed and hawed because—truth be told—i’m pretty bad at mixing prints. i think it’s an incredible talent when people can do it well, but i tend to stick with solid color accents. in the bird world, i’m more of a chicken than a wise owl.
but then i decided to just go for it.

a simple a-line jumper…

peek-a-boo!

with a contrast band at the bottom…

contrast bias tape on the neck and armholes…

IMG_4604_4295

i cut extra width in the front, which i pleated right in the center before attaching my bias tape. i ironed a little piece of pellon on the backside to help the pleats stay in place.
and since i’ve admitted my troubles with pattern coordinating, can we talk for a minute about those buttons? yup, more pattern. picked by little old me. look at me go, all branchin’ out and whatnot.

i used them again on the two front pockets
IMG_4603_4294

the back has a simple zipper, and because i ended up with too much width in the back (it was looking like one of those art smocks we used to wear in elementary school) i threw two darts in on either side… (haha...mental image of me throwing darts at her dress. yeah, i sewed darts in)

i love it. she loves it. enough said.

however…there is more to be said. (of course)

so you know that as soon as i told little bear i was going to take her picture in her whoo-whoo dress, she came running over looking for her spider. i’m not joking.

apparently mommy makes dress + mommy takes pictures = spider time! in her world.

since there were no miniscule spiders to be found, she decided it was time to do a puzzle. i guess little bear’s idea of cooperating during a photo shoot is to assume a hunched over position, thus ensuring no very few good shots of the actual dress.

to wit:

scrapbooks and parties and whoo-whoos, oh my!

welcome to day 2 of

Photobucket

sorry for the lateness of this post...there was a bit of a sewing emergency this morning.
yes, it is possible to have a "sewing emergency"...when your business is making furniture and a huge leather sectional is going out in the morning and the cushions need to be finished and your sewer calls out of work...
that, my friends, is a sewing emergency.
who gets called?

me--the stand-in sewer. the "in case of emergency break glass" sewer.

sometimes i even wear a cape.

anyway...
today i'm going to share other's owl-y projects.

first, an adorable owl scrapbook page. this comes courtesy of my DEVOTED reader...okay...and cousin, gessika:

Photobucket

how cute! i'm not a scrapbooker...mainly because i seriously DO
NOT need another hobby. but i can definitely appreciate the work that goes into a good scrapbook :o)

now here's something i'm almost tempted to hide from my girls...because as SOON as they see it they're not going to let me rest until we do it!

it's a "night owl" party done by anj @ snowybliss.

every single thing was unbelievably adorable--from the decor...

(she DREW the headboard, footboard and pillows on white cardboard to make their table look like a bed!)

...to the 'favors' (although, in my opinion these are much more than mere 'favors'!)

she made a felt owl for each little girl at the party--and each owl had a distinct "personality", which she details in her post.

even the cake was incredible!

there are tons more pictures and details on her blog--you seriously HAVE to jump over and check it out!

okay, whooo am i kidding? i want to do the party as bad as my girls... :o)

she credits the original idea to a hostess with the mostess post--also an adorable "night owl" party.
it even featured a "night owl clubhouse" for all the girls to hang in!

Photobucket

again, you've got to jump over there to check out all the adorable detail that went into the party.

so that's it for today...
i've got a couple more owl things to round out the week! come back tomorrow for the "whoo-whoo" dress!

monday monday, can’t trust that day

it’s a two-edged sword.

the big 3 head back to school, googiedaddy heads back to work.
i can get the house back in order, organized.

it needs it. bad.

i’m eating my oatmeal with a fork as i type this, because there’s not a clean spoon to be found. anywhere.

the laundry pile has exceeded the bounds of the laundry room, and is slithering it’s way down the hallway like a fabric lava flow.

there’s a sticky spot on the floor from something that spilled this morning. it’s red. it’s bad.

the kids took a hodge-podge of food to school for lunch today, because we have no bread. i was supposed to make that yesterday.

but all i want to do is collect all the rice filled heating pads i made for the kids, heat every one piping hot, and surround my unwieldy pregnant body in their soft warm embrace.

heating pad whoo-whoo’s

how cute are these things?

suzanne over at just another hang-up made about 400 of them for her grandbabies. and she so generously posted a free pattern and instructions! (she just asks that you leave her a comment if you download her pattern)

of course, suzanne’s whoo-whoo’s are super cute. she used really beautiful coordinating fabrics, looks like she handstitched around the eyes & belly, she probably even handstitched the bottoms closed…stinker.

seriously, how cute are these guys? she did a beautiful job.

and as soon as little bear saw them on the computer she flipped—“whoo-whoo’s mommy! i love it the whoo-whoo! i wanna whoo-whoo!”

and we all know how i respond to that. :)

so i pulled some stuff from my stash—fabrics i had laying around for the body & belly/heart, t-shirts from the scrap pile for the eyes & beak…i picked the fabrics for little bear’s, and once the older googies got wind of what was going on they dove right in—picking fabrics for their whoo-whoos.

IMG_4594_4277

the backs are all leftover brown minky fabric from the “lyle” blanket i made. snuggly quotient increased by about 500%.

IMG_4597_4279

they are in L.O.V.E.

IMG_4598_4280

honestly, you would think i just gave my kiddos the greatest thing since sliced bread (which, as previously mentioned, there is a lack of in our home right at the moment)

our microwave has been going non-stop since the last whoo-whoo rolled off my sewing machine. we found 1 min. 20 sec. to prove to be the ideal whoo-whoo heating time. (suzanne recommends throwing them in the oven for a minute or two, but the microwave is instant gratification)

it took me about 2 hours to cut & sew all four of these little guys. not bad at all. the pattern is incredibly simple, and as long as you don’t mind using all the rice in your house, then having to go to the store to get another 5 lb. bag, it’s totally worth it.

three girly whoo-whoos, and one “boyish” baseball whoo-whoo.
