a reality star, a child star and a little bear walk into a bar…

remember when i mentioned little bear’s self-inflicted, oddly “kate-ish” haircut?

yeah, i thought you might want to see that.

after bathtime we did a little hair experimentation.

IMG_4529_4230 kate-gosselin-hair1

granted, she’s missing the fake tan, the whitened teeth, and ooh-gobs of “work” (ahem)…but still…

ah! she’s even channeling kate’s annoyed expressions!

ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!

IMG_4534_4235_edited-1

“you paparazzi best get outta my way! i got dancin’ to do! and jon better start paying child support!”

i kid. honestly, i think it’s a real shame the family had to go through such a public meltdown. the continued publicity seeking, however……

anyway, i found it frightening enough. we needed a bang trim. which brings out the other alter-ego.

hmmm…where’s that old dress? a quick hair change and outfit switch into our best 80’s flavor finery

IMG_4537_4238

gasp!

is that? could it be?

michelle6

michele tanner? aka mary-kate & ashley olsen???

michelle

IMG_4542_4242

dang it, where IS that scrunchie when i need one?

seriously. how much full house DID i watch growing up? i mean, TGIF was awesome and all…but still…

full house

IMG_4545_4245

micelle2

you know, there was always those rumors about them being triplets, not twins……

IMG_4546_4246

“you got it, dude!”

IMG_4539_4239

i actually have had a few people mention this one to me. including my DAD of all people! (“you know, she kinda looks like that girl from that show”)

and despite yesterday’s trip through the 70’s, i’m really a girl of the 80’s. i mean, i only made it into the 70’s by 3 days technically.

so it’s not all bad i guess. i mean, the girls—now grown—have their issues. but they are cute still. (except for that weird pursed-lips thing they do in like, every picture)

michelle5

sooo…any producers out there looking to do a full house remake?

{hand by ear} call me!

it’s the way we became the brady bunch

i’ve heard of this, but i really only thought it happened in movies.
or sitcoms.

“MOM! we have to dress up like we’re from the 70’s! TOMORROW!”

huh?
it’s 6PM.
srsly????

okay, we can do this.
first, girlfriend girl. fortunately on a recent thrift shopping excursion i had come across an outfit so awesomely vintage i couldn’t NOT buy it. unfortunately it was way too short for girlfriend girl to wear on a regular basis, so it sat in the closet.

but it’s authentic. and it’s one less child i have to make something for. we’ll make an exception for today. one vaguely kate jackson-style hairdo and there she is. copasetic.

marsha marsha marsha!

onward…
tiny tim. that hair! she’s a hippie, all the way. grab a ripped pair of jeans from the thrift/mend/scavenge pile and cut the outside seam 1/3 of the way up.

IMG_4505_4223

add in a triangle of the most boss vintage-y looking fabric you can find in your stash (thanks patty!)

IMG_4506_4224

boom! instant bell bottoms.

IMG_4507_4225

top it with some leathery-looking vinyl from your stash done 3 ways: sewn into a makeshift vest and fringed around the edges, braided into a headband, and made into a belt.
long hair parted down the middle…right on baby. now we’re feelin’ the funk.

IMG_4516_4184

2 down, 1 to go.

here’s where i falter. you know if i had know about this even a DAY earlier i would have been making the boy a leisure suit. faux creepy ‘stache and all. but it’s a little late even for this momma.

sooo…daddy donates a t-shirt, which receives some late night tye-dyeing.

IMG_4511_4229

and more leftover vinyl becomes another fringed vest. what i wouldn’t give for a pair of lennon-esqe sunglasses.

of course, in the morning he decided he just wasn’t that into it. (he is 8, you know) he’d wear the shirt, but that was it. so he was more “sloppy too big t-shirt” and less pinkpolo’d.

IMG_4521_4189

major bummer.

all in all though, one far out funky group.

unfortunately momma’s photography skills were sadly lacking this morning. everything came out blurry.

not bad for a last minute project.

this momma can keep on truckin’.

warm fuzzies, two ways

the entire northeast is being blanketed in snow and freezing rain this morning.

it’s cold and wet and miserable outside.

the three oldest googies have a 2 hour delay at school.

but it’s okay, because

IMG_4460_4139

the entire googie clan is being blanketed in warm and fuzzy fleecey jammies.

something i love to do is let each googie pick out a fleece they love at the store. i use it to make giant blanket sleepers for them. cause, let’s be honest here~~even i would wear a blanket sleeper if they came in maternity sizes.

but this fleece has been sitting for…um…quite a while. so we compromised. we’re going with the easier pants and top, which the momma can get done with a lot less thinking.

last night i whipped out the pants.

IMG_4462_4141

for girlfriend girl: owls with a contrast band of orange (from a shirt grabbed out of the thrift pile)

IMG_4469_4148
(and a goofball sister sticking her head in)

for little man: phillies, with rib knit cuffs at the bottom (shocking i know. what can i say? the boy’s a phanatic)
IMG_4468_4147
(aaannndd…a goofball sister sticking her head in)

for tiny tim: turtles, with just a loose hemmed bottom (and rather psychedelic turtles at that)
(which i forgot a picture of…probably because i was so busy telling her to GET OUT OF THE WAY)

little bear didn’t get any. she got her blanket a few weeks ago, and she has about 30 pairs of jammies already. of course she was breaking my heart as every fabric i rolled out to begin cutting she looked at me and said “dis one mine mommy?”

IMG_4457_4136

they took turns sitting by my sewing machine, watching their fabric become pants. whatever they were wearing was immediately discarded in favor of soft and fuzzy fleece the instant they were done.

it was one of those times when i love being a momma.

when i remember why i’m excited for five to arrive.

i wonder if they’ll remember these things when they’re grown.

if it will influence the kind of mothers my girls become and the kind of father my son becomes.

my sewing? not too hard to figure. no deep psychoanalysis needed…my mom wasn’t a sewer. she can, but didn’t really. but i have a memory: i’m not sure how old i was~~less than 7. she got one of those pre-printed fabrics. it was a strawberry shortcake pillow/doll (a redhead! yay!) and made it for me. it was basically a shaped pillow. but i still remember it. i remember loving it. i remember that she made it. i still have it.

it gives me the warm fuzzies.

and i’m pretty sure that’s why i sew for my babies.

even when they act like goobers when i try to take their pictures.

i love this job.

how about you? what makes you do what you do? why are you the mom that you are today? what memory do you hold from childhood that shapes who you are today?
