my 'nesting' has begun to take on that manic quality familiar to so many pregnant women.
i was up at 3 am this morning, thinking about the family room that desperately needed attention. and then i got up and attacked it for 2 1/2 hours.
in the last week or so, i have cleaned out every one of my children's dressers and closets.
at last count--around 8 trashbags full of clothes and shoes to be donated, and around 5 bags of trash to be tossed (as well as some larger items that weren't bagged...just snuck into the trash when the kids weren't looking)
i've sorted, washed, organized and put away all the clothes i have for the baby.
i washed out the car seat and went through all my "supplies", organizing and putting away and buying the few things i was missing to be fully prepared for this little one's arrival.
this weekend girlfriend girl will be getting baptized. my girl, making a huge adult decision. so we will be having some friends and family at the house for dinner. this is the first time we've really "entertained" in months (usually a much more regular occurance).
between the hormones of my pregnancy turning me into a one-woman whirlwind of sanitization and the hormones of my pregnancy turning me into a, well, hormonal mess who cries every time i think of the big step my oldest daughter is taking and so i throw myself into other things to try and distract myself and the fact that our home is not anything close to what i would normally consider "company-ready"...
well,....just, well.
i'm sure you can imagine.
all of this, of course, tempered by the overriding need to not overdo and somehow throw myself into labor. which is a distinct possibility--according to signs my body is sending up.
so, until after saturday i'll be doing my best to clean from the comfort of a rolling ottoman. broom in hand, vacuum trailing behind, paper towels and cleanser tucked in my sides like i'm packin' heat.
17 days people.
17 days.

the rain in spain… (SYTYC round 5)
i admit it...freely. i love dresses. i love costumes, i love gowns--bridal and otherwise. i couldn't care less about the royal wedding or the academy awards or any other celebrity-studded event...except, that is, for the dresses. oooh…the dresses.
when i watch project runway--i'm ALWAYS rooting for the gown maker--the christian siriano, the laura bennett, the austin scarlett. (even though they rarely win).
so the upcycle challenge last week at SYTYC was just the excuse i needed to get my gown-sewin' on. yup, i went into the challenge already knowing what i wanted to make--and searching out the supplies necessary for it.
it’s truly one of my all time favorite movies, movie scenes, and movie costumes. the entire scene is gorgeous—the costuming, the choreography…everything. (seriously—if you’ve never seen it, GO WATCH NOW)
when i pulled up photos of the black & white dress audrey
hepburn wore in the ascot races scene of my fair lady i realized it's major components were not that difficult to list: lace, black & white stripes, big bows, big hat.
the hat...well, i'm no hatter--mad or otherwise. it was a challenge. and it's fortunate that there was so much stuff on the top of it (the better to conceal errors with, my dears).
i started out (as usual) thinking that i would photograph the entire process for a potential tutorial.
yeah, right.
basically, for anyone who cares:
it involved three wire hangers, cut and bent into circles (two joined together to make the large outer brim, one smaller circle in the top of the hat). i made big fabric circles and sewed a pocket to slide the wire into, and put a black bias tape (homemade from scraps of course) around the edge. the 'hat' portion is a reinforced tube with a lid, sewn to a hole in the large outer brim. i made the lace cap out of another tube, sewing elastic to the bottom and handstitching it in place to the underside of the hat in a couple spots to secure it. the lace cap and a couple of bobby pins are really all that held it on--and believe me--that bad boy was HEAVY.
initially i thought it the large black and white poofy things were feathers. but i ended up using a making big yarn tassels attached to dowels, and i think they have just the right look! the "bow" on the hat is one of the sleeves from the shirt--just cut it off, sewed one end shut, stuffed it with some scraps, and sewed the other end shut.
i admit...i did buy the flowers at the $1 store. i just don't have any {ugly} fake flowers sitting around the house. ;0) but the grassy stuff...well, that i "upcycled" from my neighbor's lawn...hehehe.
once i got all my hat pieces made i took my trusty glue gun, my photo of audrey's hat, and my poor daughter and started glueing. that was really the most stressful part of the project. that hat has such a huge impact, and because i was using white fabric and hot glue--i basically had one shot to make it work.

now on to the dress…
the lace i got from a friend (thanks Patty!)--lace curtains she had in storage. i bleached them to get them a bit whiter, and then used every single piece of the two panels.
(a dress made from curtains??? that’s totally the wrong movie!! hahahaha)
the stripes were more tricky. i thought for sure i'd be able to find something suitable at the thrift shop. but it really wasn't happening. all the stripes i found were too skinny or not vibrant enough. boo.

and then i stumbled upon the referee shirt--perfection! that too i used almost every bit of. i had one sleeve and the zipper left at the end.
(and i have to say how sad the googiedaddy was to see that shirt get chopped up. he really, really liked it. i think he was hoping i'd lose the week before so i wouldn't have to use the shirt and he could keep it.)
i made my own pattern, and then pinned it right on girlfriend girl to ensure a really good fit.

we headed off to philadelphia park, hoping for some horses?
maybe? but there were no races that day :o(
it was fun to parade around and get shots at the racetrack though!

(those marker thingys in the background…maybe that’s where they got the whole black & white color scheme? ya think? i don’t know if that’s a universal “horse track” thing. i’ve never been to one before!)
as a final touch, i grabbed an old curtain rod that was lying around and cut it to size with a hacksaw. then i gathered all the white fabric i could find in my stash and rubber-banded it to the curtain rod.
ta-da! instant illusion of an umbrella! (say that 10x fast)
SOOO…i guess i should talk about the fact that i would have been out for this one? unfortunately a fellow contestant’s mother passed away, and so she resigned from the competition. so i’m still in.
but i got the fewest votes…
and you know what? i really, truly, honestly would have been fine with that. i had SO MUCH FUN making this dress. it was worth it. i’m excited to still be in the competition, but i’m sorry for how it had to happen.
well, that’s it. if you’ve made it to the end, i’ll give you my usual spiel—did you vote yet this week?
it’s SUNSHINE week! head over to vote (for me, obviously) at SYTYC!

how many reasons you need man?
okay, so truth be told…i was really hoping NOT to win SYTYC’s “knock-off” challenge week.
no, really. i’m not just sayin’ that to make myself feel better.
the thing is, the winning craft has to post a tutorial. and to do a tutorial you have to document as you work. and you know what? I HATE DOING THAT.
which, really, is why you don’t see many tutorials on googiemomma.
i’m not a big planner. i sew organically—changing my design on the fly, figuring how exactly to do something by trial and error.
who feels like stopping to photograph every.single.step?
not this momma, i can tell you that much.
i give mad props to the bloggers out there who churn out those excellent tutorials. (not to go all early 90’s on ya or nothin’…but yeah, MAD props)
when i did my knockoff dress i knew there was no way i could come up with any kind of tutorial for it. i figured if, by some FLUKE, i managed to edge out the seemingly UNSTOPPABLE force that is seekatesew i’d come up with something. (i want to hate her. really i do. but she keeps leaving me sweet comments here. and she seems so nice. hmph.)
nevermind the fact i was actually sewing machine-less at the time. my baby was in for service. yes, my workhorse of a sewing machine gave out on me. $120 later helga is good as new. (ouch!) but my industrial machine also needed to go in for service (sniff, sniff), and the timing on my serger is all wonky and needs servicing.
GAH!
what’s a gal to do???
the bulk of the dress was sewn at a friend’s home. us amateur stitchers need to stick together, ya know?
okay, that’s it. i’m done coming up with excuses. the fact is i was pretty happy with how the dress came out, and girlfriend girl LOVES it.
and that’s all i have to say about that.
now…have you been over to this week’s SYTYC challenge?
it’s “UPCYCLED”, and i had a BLAST with this one.
get thee to the voting! we’re down to six, and there’s some seriously awesome stuff over there!

let me sum up: SYTYC--round 1
well, i made it through round one.
and in case you didn't already know, this was my entry:
monogram wall art for the biggest googie's room.
remember that room? the one i blogged about here and here? (shut UP--was that really back in may and august????)
well, it was churning along nicely...until the momma got preggers of course. and then we found out five was of the female variety--and that brought it all to a screeching halt.
you see, i mentioned in that one post about how tiny that room is.
the three bedrooms that the googies share consist of two decent sized rooms, and one tiny little room. now with a fourth (gulp!) girl on the way, things need to be reconfigured--again. (it's practically our favorite pasttime around here--redoing rooms we've already done once. or twice.)
we're leaving tiny tim and little bear in one room together (the princess room), and putting girlfriend girl and five into the other decent sized room. and the tiny room--well, that will be the boy's domain. the only person in the house that doesn't have to share. so it became really pointless to continue the decorating and personalizing of girlfriend girl's BIG GIRL room...since in a matter of moments (really) it won't be anymore.
get it?
now, i realize that all this drivel is simply riveting to you casual readers of googiemomma. but that's just the way my mind works. i have to 'splain.
take it as my way of drowning you with words and pointless details to compensate for the fact that i never followed through on sharing girlfriend girl's room. (srsly--almost a YEAR since that first post. bad, bad blogger)
and, perhaps most importantly, do NOT take the above photo as being indicative in any way of said room being complete, neat, and orderly. i assure you--IT IS NOT.
at.all.
but i will not share with you the other 3/4 of the room. i already air too much dirty laundry on this blog. i'm sure you'll take my word for it.
just know that this particular area is a sampling of how i imagine the room to look. and how, once we move it all over to the OTHER room and i rework my "plan" to include a crib--it will look.
oh, and the details on the monogram wall hanging will be up later this week. pinky swear. current post notwithstanding, we all know how good i am about these things.

it’s the way we became the brady bunch
i’ve heard of this, but i really only thought it happened in movies.
or sitcoms.
“MOM! we have to dress up like we’re from the 70’s! TOMORROW!”
huh?
it’s 6PM.
srsly????
okay, we can do this.
first, girlfriend girl. fortunately on a recent thrift shopping excursion i had come across an outfit so awesomely vintage i couldn’t NOT buy it. unfortunately it was way too short for girlfriend girl to wear on a regular basis, so it sat in the closet.
but it’s authentic. and it’s one less child i have to make something for. we’ll make an exception for today. one vaguely kate jackson-style hairdo and there she is. copasetic.
marsha marsha marsha!
onward…
tiny tim. that hair! she’s a hippie, all the way. grab a ripped pair of jeans from the thrift/mend/scavenge pile and cut the outside seam 1/3 of the way up.
add in a triangle of the most boss vintage-y looking fabric you can find in your stash (thanks patty!)
boom! instant bell bottoms.
top it with some leathery-looking vinyl from your stash done 3 ways: sewn into a makeshift vest and fringed around the edges, braided into a headband, and made into a belt.
long hair parted down the middle…right on baby. now we’re feelin’ the funk.
2 down, 1 to go.
here’s where i falter. you know if i had know about this even a DAY earlier i would have been making the boy a leisure suit. faux creepy ‘stache and all. but it’s a little late even for this momma.
sooo…daddy donates a t-shirt, which receives some late night tye-dyeing.
and more leftover vinyl becomes another fringed vest. what i wouldn’t give for a pair of lennon-esqe sunglasses.
of course, in the morning he decided he just wasn’t that into it. (he is 8, you know) he’d wear the shirt, but that was it. so he was more “sloppy too big t-shirt” and less pinkpolo’d.
major bummer.
all in all though, one far out funky group.
unfortunately momma’s photography skills were sadly lacking this morning. everything came out blurry.
not bad for a last minute project.
this momma can keep on truckin’.

warm fuzzies, two ways
the entire northeast is being blanketed in snow and freezing rain this morning.
it’s cold and wet and miserable outside.
the three oldest googies have a 2 hour delay at school.
but it’s okay, because
the entire googie clan is being blanketed in warm and fuzzy fleecey jammies.
something i love to do is let each googie pick out a fleece they love at the store. i use it to make giant blanket sleepers for them. cause, let’s be honest here~~even i would wear a blanket sleeper if they came in maternity sizes.
but this fleece has been sitting for…um…quite a while. so we compromised. we’re going with the easier pants and top, which the momma can get done with a lot less thinking.
last night i whipped out the pants.
for girlfriend girl: owls with a contrast band of orange (from a shirt grabbed out of the thrift pile)
(and a goofball sister sticking her head in)
for little man: phillies, with rib knit cuffs at the bottom (shocking i know. what can i say? the boy’s a phanatic)
(aaannndd…a goofball sister sticking her head in)
for tiny tim: turtles, with just a loose hemmed bottom (and rather psychedelic turtles at that)
(which i forgot a picture of…probably because i was so busy telling her to GET OUT OF THE WAY)
little bear didn’t get any. she got her blanket a few weeks ago, and she has about 30 pairs of jammies already. of course she was breaking my heart as every fabric i rolled out to begin cutting she looked at me and said “dis one mine mommy?”
they took turns sitting by my sewing machine, watching their fabric become pants. whatever they were wearing was immediately discarded in favor of soft and fuzzy fleece the instant they were done.
it was one of those times when i love being a momma.
when i remember why i’m excited for five to arrive.
i wonder if they’ll remember these things when they’re grown.
if it will influence the kind of mothers my girls become and the kind of father my son becomes.
my sewing? not too hard to figure. no deep psychoanalysis needed…my mom wasn’t a sewer. she can, but didn’t really. but i have a memory: i’m not sure how old i was~~less than 7. she got one of those pre-printed fabrics. it was a strawberry shortcake pillow/doll (a redhead! yay!) and made it for me. it was basically a shaped pillow. but i still remember it. i remember loving it. i remember that she made it. i still have it.
it gives me the warm fuzzies.
and i’m pretty sure that’s why i sew for my babies.
even when they act like goobers when i try to take their pictures.
i love this job.
how about you? what makes you do what you do? why are you the mom that you are today? what memory do you hold from childhood that shapes who you are today?
